Location
Kedarnath temple is located on the Garhwal Himalayan range, near Mandakini river, in the Uttarakhand state. Kedar is another name of lord Shiva. Kedarnath is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage that also includes Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

Kedarnath is situated at an altitude of 3,581 m. To reach the temple, you have to trek approx. 20 km uphill from Gaurikund as the roads are not motorable. Pony and pitthu services are available as in other popular pilgrimage spots.

The temple is built of hugh stone slabs on a rectangular platform. Large grey steps lead to the holy sanctum, and you can find inscriptions in Pali language on the steps.

The temple is open to the general public only between the months of April and November. During winters, the lord Shiva is carried down to Ukhimath where He is worshiped for the next six months. The best time to travel is from May to September.

Kedarnath temple is surrounded by snow covered mountains and the sight is very scenic as well as divine. The trek to Kedar is well organized and highly structured inspite of the temple being situated at such a height.

\"\"The nearest railway station to Gaurikund is Rishikesh, which is approx. 250 km from Gaurikund. Gaurikund is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh.

\"\" Buses to Haridwar and Rishikesh are available from ISBT Delhi. From major cities of the Uttarakhand state such as Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh, buses and taxis to Gaurikund are easily available.
